Friday night I was transported by a fairy. I don’t understand how it could have happened that during my entire existence, in a totally separate space of time, there has been a fairy collecting and arranging a world for me. It makes me question if anything in life can actually be described as random. When I expressed my disbelief, the fairy spoke, moving its hands very gracefully, “Well you know, everything you’ve ever done or been in your life has lead you up to this very moment. So, yes, I guess you can say this was planned, in a way… You’ve been there, so that you could be here.”
The first room was light colored and decorated with velvet paintings of matadors and flamenco dancers, another of Buddha surrounded by many masks, a piano and drum set. Inside the bass drum was an expertly folded leopard print blanket. The lamp table held one perfect ceramic red rose. Straight ahead was a red kitchen, like crimson. To the right was a womb. The walls were painted in the bright red of my first moons and then gradually blended into a deep chocolate burgundy. The walls at the head of the bed were covered with flowers. Bold, thick strokes of dark, rich oil. To the left a young girl in a Tudor dress carefully scanning over the room. To the right, Florentina, a flamenco dancer had the ability to keep the blood from flowing languidly. The bed was low and against the left hand corner wall. It was draped in a purple velvet patchwork quilt and topped with an antique tapestry pillow made of delicate blue and yellow fabric and an African voodoo doll held center court. At the foot of the bed was a small table painted with yellow and gold flowers. On top of it was an altar composed of rosaries, saint cards and other symbolisms. There were two saints; one right side up and another upside down. Emily, a porcelain doll, held a yellow 1 ball in her lap. There was a golden jaguar perfectly poised to guard over all the possessions. The closet, which turned out to be the impetus for it all, held other secret treasures draped so gently by flower covered tapestries and shawls. The incense smoke spiraled down around me.
It was The Shrine of Tonight, a shrine made specifically for the adoration of pretty things and magical princesses. Every inch of the space had been so intentionally adorned with the most specific brilliant treasure. It was all painstaking and deliberate. The fairy had to have known me forever. It’s all so amazing and extraordinary and I don’t know how I’ll manage that reality.
